Teppanyaki Dinner
May 30, 2008 - 11.58Day 3 in Toronto, I went to a Japanese Teppanyaki dinner with Zuka and her family. It was a very entertaining meal. The food was also delicious. I ordered the seafood and mignon meal and upgraded the salmon to sea bass. Teppanyaki is basically grilling food on a hot plate. In these restaurant, the chef cooks right in front of you and often perform tricks with the food for entertainment.
Before the entrée, we were given a salad, miso soup, and kappa (cucumber) and sake (salmon) maki rolls.
I thought the cup looks pretty nice so I took a picture of it.
The chef first cooked some veggies consist of onions, red pepper, green pepper, and cucumbers.
He made a little volcano with the onions.
He used a lot of alcohol on the veggies?
The veggies are still cooking under the lid. Next up was the seafood. My friend’s parents ordered lobsters. To the right, there are the fish fillets. Hiding between the lid and the lobsters are shrimps which is part of the seafood meal.
My share of veggies and shrimp.
Seafood also includes scallops.
My share of scallops…
.. and sea bass. It was good fish although it was a bit more salty than I would like.
Lobster is cooked!
Next up were the mignon steaks.
Medium rare-ish. I like my steak somewhat bloody.
With a side of veggies – bean sprouts, carrots, cucumbers.
These are my friend’s parent’s sirloin steaks.

Chef showing off his egg throwing skills.
The chef let me play around with throwing the eggs a bit and I manage to throw one right in from of Zuka’s mom. Hehe. Good thing it didn’t hit anyone.
Lastly, there was fried rice.
Before the chef actually fried the rice, he threw egg pieces to us where we try to catch it in our mouths. Most of them ended up on the ground.
The chef then cut up the long piece of egg into small pieces. Notice how towards the end, the eggs are flying right pass the rice…
…to right in front of my friend’s plate.
Actually frying the rice now.
My fried rice which made me totally stuffed.
Zuka’s fried rice had an extra egg. It was to compensate for the egg thrown on her head earlier.
Overall it was a very fun and fulfilling meal. I’ve had teppanyaki before but it wasn’t nearly as fun. I didn’t get to go up and pretend to cook. It might be because this was a Monday and there weren’t as many people in the restaurant.
