An Unnoticeable Update

March 31, 2008 - 8.07

It’s 8am and I’m wondering what I’m doing up so early. Oh wait.. have I slept?

Yesterday I made a ‘video’ of the a song I used to like as a kid. When I tried to upload it on YouTube, it redirects to the login page (in a logged off state) after ‘uploading’ for sometime. When I log back in to check my list of videos, the song vid hasn’t been uploaded. Maybe I have too many script, ads, cookies plug-ins for Firefox that it’s preventing sites to function normally. I altered the settings a few times and still failed to upload it in 4 attempts. I resorted to IE which worked on first try. I embedded it into my post with a WordPress plug-in since HTML codes isn’t very compatible with my theme. (Update @ 11:45am: Plain HTML embed codes are now working fine.)

It was all fine until I started poking around other forms of viewing the blog post. Then I realized, the YouTube video tag I used for the plug-in ends up as plain text in RSS feeds and search results. How annoying! I browsed around the source code, trying to figure out why the plug-in is only applied to the typical view of a post. I was semi-successful in that I got rid of the plain text video tag but now the whole notion of having a video in that post disappeared. But while I was at it, I updated the theme style a bit, widening the post column and fixing a few inconsistencies in various views.

While searching for solutions, I found out that version 2.5 of WordPress was released 2 days ago. I haven’t updated the platform since I installed it at version 2.2.1. Hoping it might have better support of videos, I upgraded to version 2.5. I was quite exciting when I noticed the ‘Add Video’ icon on the post editor. However, when I typed the URL of the video and gave it a title, it merely gave me a link to the video as opposed to embedding it. The attempt in fixing video embeds fails once again.

On the bright side I got a little familiar with parts of the WordPress source code but figuring it all out will have to wait. Right now, I need some sleep. Note I started this around 1:30am.
